The Environment Agency has produced a guide that is aimed at land and property owners who are located alongside a river or watercourse.
As an overview the guide basically explains your rights and responsibilities. In legal terms you are a ‘riparian owner’
Surprise, surprise one of your responsibilities as a ‘riparian owner’ is ‘You must control any invasive alien species such as Japanese Knotweed.’
This therefore puts a responsibility on affected landowners to ensure that they put all reasonable measure in place to tackle invasive species.
